White House Report - Using Biometrics to Help Protect the Nations Boarders

White House report recommends multimodal biometrics at all entry points to US The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy just completed an outside study to analyze the feasibility of using biometric identification as a means of helping to secure US Borders. The report concludes that a single world-wide standard for biometrics is not a practical or necessary goal. Cultural differences amongst nations make it impossible to reach an international consensus that will both provide sufficient technical performance and still respect the customs and biases of the citizenry. While the US may prefer one technology because of its performance advantages or their ability to interact with federal law enforcement databases, other countries believe their citizens will only accept facial recognition or iris technologies to secure their travel documents. Thus it’s recommended that the US design a solution that is flexible enough to accommodate other country’s choice of biometrics and agree upon a process by which other countries assume the responsibility to secure the integrity of their travel documents. The report recommends that the State Department capture and employ multiple biometrics from every individual who applies for a US visa. This would include the use of high quality fingerprint, face, and iris biometric samples from all visa applicants. The biometrics would be captured using a kiosk system similar to that of an ATM machine. Furthermore, when deployed at a port of entry, biometrics should augment but not replace an inspector’s judgment and discretion for making an admission decision.

Biometrics – Part I

Part of a monthly discussion on biometrics and their uses in today’s environment Biometrics can be defined as the science of measuring unique physical and behavioral characteristics of individuals. It’s most commonly used in today’s environment to verify or identify someone’s identity. A person's biometric information can be collected and analyzed in a number of ways. Common forms of biometrics
are demonstrated below.

  • Fingerprint
  •  Facial
  •  Voice
  •  Signature
  •  Iris
  •  RetinaHand geometry
  •  Facial thermography
  •  Keystroke dynamics
  •  Palm print
  •  Vein   patterns
  •  DNA

Biometrics are quickly being adopted into today’s marketplace to replace less secure ID and password methods for user authentication (that is, verifying that people are who they say they are). Using biometric identifiers for personal authentication reduces or eliminates reliance on other security means such as passwords, photo IDs, or computer tokens which are more likely to be compromised due to loss, passing of credentials to another party, “hacking”, or forgery. Biometrics can be integrated into any application that requires security, access control, and identification or verification of people. With biometric security you can dispense with the passwords or photo IDs because the access-enabler is the individual (not something you know or have – but you personally). A chart detailing the accuracy of biometric technology is provided below.

Before considering the use of biometrics make sure that you do your homework. Each type of biometric identifier has strengths and weaknesses depending on your user demographics, application(s), and environment(s). Don’t forget that the industry experts at RILEEN can help you evaluate your needs and design the right system for you.

Product Information – DC Book

DC Book is an Arrest Booking System that allows Law Enforcement to easily navigate all facets of the arrest booking process.
